“Utterly original work. It doesn’t look like anything you’ve ever seen before, nor can you imagine thinking it up.”

Rome Prize awarded to Faye Driscoll and Macarena Gómez-Barris
Environmental Arts + Humanities
What is the purpose of art and collaborative practice in times of environmental ruination? What modes of affect, address, engagement, experimentation and documentation offer ways to reckon with the conditions of environmental loss, damage, and broken ecologies at the heart of the colonial anthropocene? How can we imagine, perform and embody biodiverse histories of human, and more than human ecologies of resurgence and repair? These questions guide the work that writer and scholar Macarena Gómez-Barris will research and prepare in collaboration with artist and choreographer Faye Driscoll for the duration of the Rome Prize residency. The fellowship affords a focus on Gómez-Barris' and Driscoll's individual creative writing, performance and research projects, as well as time to produce a co-written interdisciplinary collaboration.
Thank you to the American Academy in Rome and congratulations to all the winners!
